What is Music Therapy?

According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is “the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

Goal areas include but are not limited to building relationships, communication skills, fine and gross motor skills, emotion recognition and regulation, and engaging in and improving leisure skills (like playing an instrument). To achieve these goals, the therapist and client might sing together, analyze lyrics to a favorite or new song, play instruments, or even have an impromptu dance party with bubbles!

There are many philosophies that music therapists follow! Here at Eastside Music Therapy, we utilize a Neurodiversity-Affirmative Approach. Read on for more information.

What it means to be Neurodiversity-Affirming

To be neurodiversity-affirming, one acknowledges that neurodivergence is by itself not a flaw to be corrected. Instead, focus is placed on the individual’s strengths. The therapist acknowledges that the client is the expert on their own lived experience, and holds space for both the good and bad that come with it. Rather than focusing on neurotypical expectations, the neurodivergent community leads the way in determining most appropriate language, treatment intervention, and resources.
